I'm a classical guitar and music theory teacher, as well as an occasional composer. A few years back, I taught a number of college courses, including a beginning classical guitar course, guitar ensemble, music foundations, music theory II and aural skills II, and private lessons in classical guitar. These days, I'm doing private studio teaching only. I took my studio online once it became clear that this was going to be the best option during the pandemic, and for the last few years I've been happily teaching over Zoom. I've had a great time getting to know students all over the country (and one or two outside it) while helping them work on everything from test prep to analysis of the music they perform, Hot Cross Buns to Brouwer. The best thing about working this way is that with the variety of students I get to meet, there's never a dull moment.

My guitar teaching philosophy can be summed up this way: I instruct my students in the most efficient technique I know so that they can play the music they love with ease. Everything we do has a purpose, and I'm always happy to tell you what that purpose is. On the music theory side--well, I love chatting about theory with people, and I enjoy finding different ways to explain music theory topics so the sense of it gets across. Music theory is a framework for understanding music at a deeper level, and once it clicks, it can be really useful. If you're the kind of person who enjoys puzzles, it can also be fun!

If you're looking for a single lesson to help you with a specific issue, do please send me an e-mail; I'm happy to help if I can! My schedule for recurring weekly lessons is mostly full, but if you love classical guitar or music theory, please do feel free to write--I try to make room for students like that whenever possible.

If you find you're struggling somewhat with your music, you may find this essay on the ways, means, and purpose of good practice, to be helpful. I wrote it for my guitar pedagogy course in the last semester of my graduate study.
